The Block 2024 Guest Bedroom

The Block 2024 guest bedroom reveal has had surprisingly good moments which you don't often see this early into the show.  My favourite room was from Jesse and Paige which demonstrated a good understanding of colour and design.  Everything came together in this room and they didn't need to do anything amazing.  You can see my comments below.

As usual, I have my comments on all of the rooms and the judges run down on them too, together with photos and links to buy some of my favourite products this week.  If you click on one of these links then I may receive a small commission which in no way increases the cost to you.

The Block 2024 Guest Bedroom

First Place: Kristian and Mimi

Sleek, chic and the perfect complement to the bathroom next door, Kristian and Mimi’s bedroom could have been an “extra master for the house”, Marty said as he took in the asymmetrical design with Porta Timber feature, instagrammable styling (including the Marrunga Yubaa limited edition canvas print from Lizzy Stageman Art) and perfect colour palette. Shaynna was in love with the pendant and lamps, playing well off the Kinsman wardrobe colours, she said, while for Darren it was the oversized upholstered bedhead and base from Martini Furniture – he couldn’t keep his hands off it! It all added up, the judges agreed, to a room that was “next level” and stamped the couple as a powerhouse this year.

My thoughts on Kristian and Mimi's  guest bedroom

  • The colour palette is sublime in this room.  This is referred to as a harmonious colour scheme as the palette of teal, blue and green all sit next to each other on the colour wheel.  Partnered with earthy greys and lots of layers of texture, the room is very very successful.
  • The textured carpet with the textured rug on top is very appealing and zones the bed space perfectly.
  • I love the artwork and the oversized bedhead is stunning.
  • I am not a fan though of the asymmetrical timber feature.  This will be polarising and I don't believe it added anything much to the design.
  • The room however is a really good start and builds on their win from last week.  I don't agree that it was the winning room, but it should certainly be commended.

Second Place: Courtney and Grant

Colourful, playful and sure to impress young visitors, Courtney and Grant’s kid's bedroom delivered personality in spades, Shaynna said as she took in the Owl, Koala and Wallaby works from Artist Lane. And versatile too, Marty pointed out, noting that all it would take was a bed change and fresh artwork to turn this into an adult’s room. Darren however, loved it just the way it was, praising the pistachio and blue palette that played off the Grafico vertical stripe wallpaper. The lack of a fan worried the judges however, with all three worrying buyers might be put off by having limited climate control in an area known for changes in the weather. Aside from that, Marty finished, it’s all “So damn cute!”

My thoughts on Courtney and Grant's Guest Bedroom

  • If you just look at the shell of this bedroom, it is very pleasing with the striped wallpaper, oak cabinetry and linen look curtains, so it can be adapted to become a more grown up room.  However, I feel that a guest bedroom should be displayed as such as often buyers can't see past the styling.
  • It is of course pretty cute and I do like the design and colour of the bedhead, which is a lovely focal point for the room.
  • The artworks are my favourite.  They are just lovely.
  • Overall this room is to be commended, but I don't think it deserved second place.

Third Place: Jesse and Paige

“Whoah!” said Shaynna when she walked into Jesse and Paige’s guest bedroom, this was a “phenomenal” room, filled with brave choices, starting with the bold Striped Linen Grafico wallpaper. “Very high end,” Marty agreed, “and beachy too!” For Darren, it was the blend of traditional and contemporary that won him over, with square set ceilings, no cornices but home-style door handles. It all added up, he said, to a “Long Island feel” he just adored. With the Kinsman wardrobes wall-to-wall, Anna Blatman artwork from Artist Lane and wainscotting bringing it all together, this was a huge improvement on week one, they all agreed.

My thoughts on Jesse and Paige's guest bedroom

  • For me, this is the winning room.  There are so many successful elements to this room and overall it is very appealing.  The perfect elegant and welcoming guest bedroom.
  • I like the way that the wallpaper has been used throughout the room.  This has worked well due to the incorporation of white wainscoting, which is preferable to using it only on two walls as Courtney and Grant did.
  • The bed frame is perfect for a coastal retreat, while the bedside tables in black with the brass lamps and hardware, pull the scheme together.  People are often tempted to match the colour of furniture, but to mix it up is brave and can work really well, as Jesse and Paige have demonstrated.
  • The fresh white bedding with the soft green accents and the lovely quirky artwork, ensure that this room is fresh and uplifting.
  • This room is a great mix of elegance and fun, with a lovely colour palette.  A great achievement for Jesse and Paige.

Equal Fourth Place: Ricky & Haydn

Finally, Marty said when he entered Ricky and Hayden’s kids retreat, bunk beds! Matched with the huge Grafico Wild World Map wallpaper over the Kinsman wardrobes, a gaming centre and Disney+ on the wall-mounted TV, this was a space the judges felt was right at home in a holiday house – and bound to be a favourite with young visitors. But are the B2C hardwood frame bunks facing the right way? Marty asked. Not only did placing them opposite the window make watching TV difficult, but it gave a claustrophobic feel. And despite a beautiful palette, Shaynna pointed out execution problems with the paint, plaster and door. Time to step things up, the boys were ordered!

My thoughts on Ricky and Haydn's guest bedroom

  • Due to its size, this bedroom really can only work with bunkbeds and the execution of them is good.  I disagree with the judges regarding the orientation of the beds as you can sit either end of them and I really dislike a room that is primarily focused on a tv unit.
  • I like the attention to detail with the placement of the wall lights and the bedlinen is great for a coastal scheme without being too childish.
  • The wardrobes, although great for children, really do prevent this from being a more age adaptable space, so it is a little concerning that the guys have limited their options here.  However, if this is truly meant to be a young person's bedroom in a holiday home, then Ricky and Haydn have done a good job.

Equal Fourth Place: Kylie and Brad

Easy to clean floorboards, a fan overhead… now this is more like it Marty said as he took in Kylie and Brad’s kids room. The matching “Oh me” and Oh my” artworks from Artist Lane and Licia Mango Wood bedsides all helped make the room much better than previous weeks… but Shaynna wasn’t convinced, this is still a very dark room, she said, with confused styling and it was all a bit too art deco for the area. “There’s nothing coastal about it!” she said. The blackout blind could have been a sheer, she suggested, and more “sass” was needed. Another miss for the Queensland couple, but not a total loss, Marty said, with the fundamentals of the room right, just a few changes needed to broaden the appeal.

My thoughts on Kylie and Brad's guest bedroom

  • I agree that the floorboards are appealing, particularly for a holiday home.  However, I am a fan of carpet in bedrooms and the lack of it is a little concerning as the weather can be pretty cold in this part of the world.
  • The absence of sheers or curtains also adds to the abundance of hard edges in the room which is exacerbated by the hard headboard and oversized mirror, which doesn't work in its current location.  The room really needs to be much softer.
  • I do love the artworks, which are soft and dreamy. the bedside tables with their rounded edges and the navy wardrobes are very smart.  However, this is a room that I don't feel has come together successfully.
